The UPL's Ecosystem
The University Paris Lumières integrates itself into an environment favourable to its development. This environment is composed of important strengths which reinforce the UPL’s strategy, thanks to its own strengths, both material and immaterial.
Agence du Service Civique (Civic Service Agency)
Civic Agency : The French national volunteer service
The Agence du Service Civique (Civic Service Agency) has determined, since its creation, and in agreement with its board of direction and the strategic committee, the main direction and major programs. These are implemented in close connection with local referents from the Agence du Service Civique, with Local authorities for sports and social cohesion (DRJSCS) and the interdepartmental Directorate Department for Youth. In the continuation of traditional activities by the State Services for youth, who are constantly involved in popular education, Civic Service has become one of their most emblematic missions.
From the creation of the Agence du Service Civique in May 2010 to the 20th March, the Strategic committee, which brings together the host organizations, decentralized departments, members of Parliament and the volunteers, will have met eight times. The Board of directors has met thirteen times. The Agence du Service Civique team consists of about twenty people.
- In cooperation with the Agence du Service Civique, the UPL Community will take action in three key areas: to promote and publicize the Agence du Service Civique, to welcome volunteers for university projects, to facilitate the application process for volunteers selected through the Agence du Service Civique, and to put in place measures to prevent students dropping out early from schools.
AFEV (Association de la Fondation Étudiante pour la Ville)
AFEV, the student solidarity network involved in working-class areas, is a French national association established in 1991, based on clear evidence of inequality in working-class areas, and on the fact that the nation’s youth want to fight against this.
This voluntary organization recruits volunteer students to help youths from various troubled neighbourhoods.
- AFEV will be able to reinforce UPL Community projects, such as the recognition of the place of students as citizens and the “cordées de la réussite” project etc.
The BDIC Library
Freely open to all readers - students, historians, academics, journalists, documentary film makers, all those with an interest in contemporary history - the BDIC is not only a library and a documentation centre, but also a focal point for the diffusion of historical research, and a cultural institution with an international role.
Today, the BDIC is : - A MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY, with hundreds of thousands of books, tens of thousands of periodical titles and thousands of audiovisual documents recordings (its ''Service audiovisuel'' also produces new oral history resources) - A CENTRE FOR PRIVATE ARCHIVES, containing hundreds of private archival collections from France and further afield, donated by NGOs, societies, associations (in the field of human rights, for example), political movements, prominent intellectual and political figures, actors in, and witnesses of, contemporary events - A MUSEUM, housing more than one million iconographic items (posters, photographs, prints, drawings and paintings).
Established in 1918, the BDIC Library is attached to Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense
- The UPL Community is running the ambitious heritage project of the BDIC Museum, in particular through the creation of an exhibition space for the general public, through the digitalization of some of the collection, and through specific actions for local education institutions.
By 2012, the campus will bring together more than 12,000 students including some 4,000 PhD students on a 130,000 m² site located on land in Aubervilliers, La Plaine (Condorcet-1) and Paris, at the Porte de la Chapelle (Condorcet-2). The institution will comprise the most prestigious French schools and universities in Human Sciences including EHESS, EPHE, Université Paris 1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne, Université Paris 8 Vincennes – Saint-Denis, the École Nationale des Chartes, and Université Paris 13. The Campus Condorcet is becoming a centre of excellence boasting international outreach.
- Within the collaborative platforms allocated to the Université Paris 8, on the site of the Campus Condorcet, the UPL Community will be able to develop scientific projects in cooperation with teachers and teachers and researchers from the Campus Condorcet.
Cap Digital is the French business cluster for digital content and services. We are a non-profit organization established since 2006.
Cap Digital was created as a result of a public policy for the development of economic sectors with strong growth potential located in the same geographical area. Since 2009, the cluster has been implementing the Paris Region’s strategy for digital content and services, supporting innovative SMEs in this field.
Our 700 members are primarily innovative SMEs but also major universities, higher education establishments, research labs, and corporations focused on a specific technology-driven industry (Triple helix cluster).
Our members represent French digital industry’s most active players in digital content.
- The UPL Community naturally wishes to develop a partnership with the French business cluster “CAP Digital”:
Within the development of the digital technology for end-users, committed to by the UPL Community. In this context, CAP Digital is associated with the IDEFI CréaTIC.
Local and regional authorities "State-regional Plan Contract" (CPER)
Both founding universities have developed relations with local and regional authorities for a long time: City of Saint-Denis, urban community “Plaine de Commune”, and the General Council for Université Paris 8; City of Nanterre, urban community of “Mont-Valérien”, and General Council of “Hauts-de-Seine” for Université Paris Ouest, as well as the Île-de-France region for both universities.
These relations include local contracts and framework agreements, particularly rich in structuring actions. Some of them should be synergized at the UPL Community level.
- The UPL Community intends to reinforce its cooperation within two development poles: the pole Nanterre La Défense and the pole Saint-Denis – Plaine de Commune.
The next “State-regional Plan Contract (CPER)” could allow the UPL Community to realize, among other things, civil society oriented heritage projects, including the BDIC Museum project, and the Centre of Arts project.
Institut du Service Civique
The Institut du Service Civique (Civic Service Institute) was conceived to accelerate the recognition of Civic Service. It brings together higher educational establishments (universities, business schools, professional schools...), companies and foundations to guarantee access to training courses, employment or creation of their own activity for applicants from the institute.
In 2012, the very first promotion will comprise from 100 to 150 graduates. The ambition of the Institut du Service Civique is to help volunteers each year gain access to responsibilities in the civil, economic and social life of our country whilst using the skills they demonstrated during their “Service Civique”. For more information: www.institut-service-civique.fr
- In cooperation with the Agence du Service Civique (Civic Service Agency), the UPL Community will take action in three key areas: to promote and publicize the Agence du Service Civique, to welcome volunteers for university projects, to facilitate the application process for volunteers selected through the Agence du Service Civique, and to put in place measures to prevent students dropping out early from schools.
All kinds of cooperation within the UPL Community will be supported future public transport plans for the Paris region. With the new circular railway network, the Universités Paris 8 and Nanterre will become two key points of the north and the west Paris region as part of the “Grand Paris” project, along an axis from the city of Montreuil to La Défense.
In this respect, both universities are affected by territorial development contracts (CDT) which form part of the “Grand Paris” policy, such as the “Nord Parisien” for Paris 8, and “Entre-deux-Seine” for Paris Ouest.
- The UPL Community will be fully integrated in the “Grand Paris” project :
The UPL Community intends to intervene in favour of the development of suburban areas.
Run by Université Paris 8, and in association with Université Paris Ouest, this project has been chosen as part of the call for proposals “Excellence initiatives in innovative training” (IDEFI). The aim of the project “Innovative training for, and through Creativity, Action, and Collaboration” (CréaTIC) is to carry out research in a creative manner, and creative projects in the manner of experimental research. The IDEFI CréaTIC is intended as a laboratory for innovation, especially in the field of lifelong training and learning.
The IDEFI CréaTIC will contribute to the UPL Community:
In relation to the development of digital technology for end-users, undertaken by the UPL Community.
In relation to the research project based around the field of creativity, such as the research theme No. 2: Art and Creation, which includes an educational strand, as well as a research strand. The training process is therefore based around theoretical reflexion on the notion of “creation sciences”.
In relation to the development of the Art Centre project.
LABEX : Les Passés dans le présent
The Laboratoire d’Excellence (Labex) « Les Passés dans le présent : histoire, patrimoine et mémoire » is concerned with the presence of the past in contemporary society. More specifically, the cluster seeks to understand mediations of history in the digital age, politics of memory, social appropriations of the past up- and downstream from heritage policies. The reflection is interdisciplinary and organized in two fundamental themes: “Connections to the past: representations and assessments” and “Active knowledge of the past: tools and practices of transmission”.
The Laboratoire d’Excellence (Labex) « Les Passés dans le présent: histoire, patrimoine et mémoire » is backed jointly by Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense, and the CNRS.
